Kathleen Rowe Karlyn, founding director of the Cinema Studies program and professor emerita at the University of Oregon, is the author of the award-winning The Unruly Woman: Gender and the Genres of Laughter (Texas, 1995) and Unruly Girls, Unrepentant Mothers  (Texas, 2011), as well as articles in Screen, Cinema Journal, Genders, Feminist Media Studies and other publications. Her books and essays have been widely cited in diverse disciplines, taught in university classrooms worldwide, and recognized for having paved the way for the wave of feminist scholarship on comedy that followed her early work on the subject.
